Aug. 28th, 2005 07:28 pmToday at work I explained the pronounciation and linguistic origin of the word "Croissant" to a nice Indian man with a very short, pretty wife and a little girl with a monobrow. He then bought one, and wandered off, explaining to his wife that "...it's from the French, yes..." and I was amused.
Also, I just read a short story which really brought home the "Show, don't tell" rule. It was pretty good... at the end, when the author stopped using his characters as puppets for the lengthy explanations, which were all in the same voice with only a little nod towards camouflage using one, count it, ONE slang expression that one of the characters used. Just because some things are "after being" things from one characters mouth, doesn't mean I can't tell that you're just expositioning through arbitrary people.
