No sooner does my ludicrous week of assignment deth finish than begins a ludicrous week of social overclocking. This is preferable, but I don't think my room is getting tidied any time soon.
I am writing this in a computer lab at my uni, so I sadly won't be able to include pictures at this point in time unless they were already online: but rest assured - there are indeed pictures. I'm hanging out here because I had to be in the city at noon to be photographed by the extras agency I signed up with like, last year, who still haven't got me any work, but that's cool because they don't have a sign-up fee. They want to have a current picture on the books whenever possible - I emailed them about a month after I cut off all my hair and dyed it red, and we have collectively failed to fix it for about three months. But that's done now, and good thing too because my original photo there was really pretty awful considering they had a professional photographer called Pierre and everything. This time it was just the receptionist with a digital camera and I am pretty sure it's better. Did I mention I dragged a giant bag-full of library books down there? I was going to return the books first and then show up, but I was late, so I had to schlep them all the way across the city to uni afterwards. I have no idea why I borrowed quite so many books. Some of them were not even related to my assignments - when did I think I was going to read them?
Anyway, I'm still here because I'm going to see Wicked this evening with Stan and Des and David. I'm excited! So I shall use the time before they show up to try and paint you guys a word-picture of quite how hilarious my week has been and is going to continue to be.
On Thursday I saw The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus with Stan and David. I shan't post spoilers, unless you consider "Needs moar acid" or "Whoah, Johnny Depp stole Orlando Bloom's facial hair" to be spoilers, but it was pretty awesome! Then we got burgers from the one kebab shop still open in Bondi on a Thursday night and got halfway through them before we realised they'd given me David's burger and him mine. Then we went on an impromptu night beach photoshoot involving an old television and some rollerblades. Well, David just happened to be carrying an ancient TV around in his car, so I was like, what ARE you gonna do with all that junk inside your trunk? And he was like, take photos of it in weird places! So we went and found a playground.
Saturday was the Axis of Awesome concert with David, Melissa and Alice. We arranged to meet at Star Bar at six. I arrived at six thirty, after buying some comics. The others were, naturally, even later, but I was not lonely! After hanging out and reading some House of Mystery for a while, I was intercepted by Avi and Lily, who were attending a completely unrelated birthday party at the same venue! So naturally I tagged along. Shortly afterwards half the party left because the birthday boy was com-pletely hammered and the bar staff kicked him out. I was left to hang out with Lily, her friend Akhil, some other guy who refused to budge because he was half-way through a steak, and a girl called Jossie who I'd bonded with over musical theatre. Friends of mine later turned out to know her: "Oh god, she talks so much and so fast," they said. "Really?" I replied. "I didn't notice." Then there was a significant pause and we all changed the subject.
Eventually my concert companions trickled in - as did Stan and Toly, because apparently ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY was in the city on Saturday night. At this point I got somewhat sloshed, because I'd bought a drink, and David had bought me a drink to apologise for being late, and somebody had bought a round, and anyway the rest of the evening up to the concert is slightly blurry. But I distinctly remember the Axis of Awesome being, well, exactly what it says on the tin! Alice had not seen them before, it was fun to watch her lol.
Then on Monday I went to Lillian's house also with David, and it is occurring to me that this is a very
frostickle-full week, I had better not tell my mother or she will think we're dating. Anyway, Lillian and I are planning a Torchwood musical type thing, so we were going to have a big marathon with everyone who was interested, but everybody else bailed on us, so we just watched Waters of Mars and half of A Very Potter Musical. Then me and David headed back to the city to meet Mel+date and Avi and David's friend Ulricha for a life drawing class at the Arthouse. Yup, life drawing, with the nude models and everything. On the way in we ran into more coincidental randoms in the form of a couple kids from my uni. The conversation went something like this:
Alistair: Maggie! What are you up to!
Maggie: Life drawing!
Alistair and Chantell: *exchange look with eyebrow*
Alistair: We're in!
So they joined our party(which is good, we needed a druid) and we headed upstairs, where we discovered two things. The first was immediately obvious: everybody else had gotten there early and claimed all the tables and chairs near the front. We probably should have seen that coming. The second came as we were scrounging chairs at the back of the room in the form of an announcement that the two models had called in sick, and one replacement had been found - incidentally did anybody in the audience feel like earning $100?
A volunteer was eventually found (and a pretty one!), who hilariously requested David of all people to hold up a sheet for her to change behind. Then we all commenced to draw, except for Avi, who said he was just there "for the atmosphere." Sadly enough, given that it's Avi, we were pretty sure that was the whole truth and nothing but the truth, although later he did use the model for body-part reference to draw a Frankenstein doll. I was a little rusty, and it didn't help that she changed poses really fast so I ended up with a bunch of unfinished half-body sketches, but I got into it by the end and managed a couple of decent pictures, which I will finish and scan eventually.
After that Ulricha and my uni kids left and the rest of us headed back to Lillian's with a brief detour to buy alcohol and groceries. We then had a very nice booze-up on her kitchen floor (white carpets are terrifying). Des and I slept over, and the next day I headed directly to Newtown (do not pass home, do not collect change of clothing) where Avi and Des had organised a vegan lunch somewhat... optimistically (in that about half the guests did not show up). I took leftovers home to my family - I didn't tell them the meat was fake :P
Full of vegan food we had a wander down Newtown to check out the shops. At this point we ran into still more randoms in the form of my friend Alex from state drama camp back in year eleven. To complete the incestuous social circle venn diagram can I just mention that 1) one of the people he was with knew Avi from somewhere else (so to recap, I run into a friend and it turns out his ex-girlfriend and my ex-boyfriend are buddies) and 2) he knows
jk_rockin, thus connecting three separate groups of my friends. Seriously, Sydney, what the hell?
Anyway, Alex hung out with us for a while, by which I meant spent half an hour arguing with Avi about socialism and Israel while the rest of us listened in fascination and tried really hard not to giggle out loud. (Alex, dear internet, is a giant bearded communist hippy with perpetually broken shoes. I am currently plotting to introduce him to Avi's friend Jess, who is a tiny fire-loving libertarian goth with ridiculously huge false eyelashes. Possibly this will cause the universe to implode, but I am willing to take that risk!)
And then I came home and discovered that I got quoted three times in last week's ljdq. My weekend, dear internet, was fucking AWESOME.
But the thing is. This week? Directly out of hibernation? Today I see Wicked. Tomorrow Avi's having a hotpot and wine night. Friday is the TROUTS end-of-semester party. Saturday is Nicky's birthday party.
I may actually die.
