Ohhhh. I am ded from pancakes, you guys, augh. I brought half of them home in a doggy bag oh my god. Liza alllmost finished hers but Stan took home as much as me, I think. And then me and Liza had an intense philosophical discussion on the way home in which Liza argued for the status quo and I argued for human flexibility. Ten minutes later she was on msn asking me to define emo, which I shall reproduce here because I actually think I nailed it and it will be nice to have a concise explanation on hand in case somebody is Wrong On The Internet.
(01:30:18) Maggie: the initial emo "concept" was that mainstream society discourages people from sharing and expressing negative emotions, without actually doing anything to cure them - so it encourages repression and subterfuge in people who do feel those emotions. Now, teenagers happen to feel those emotions more strongly, because of hormones and because each broken heart or whatever is the first one and there's nothing to compare it to to feel "it could be worse". So teenage collective phenomena have a tendency towards letting people express those negative emotions and discuss them and make them into art instead of hiding them.
(01:30:27) Maggie: punk was actually first, but punk focussed on ANGER
(01:30:30) Maggie: Emo focused on sadness
(01:30:34) Maggie: then it sort of mutated
(01:30:48) Maggie: and instead of just expressing sadness it became about DWELLING on sadness
(01:30:57) Maggie: which is arguably about as unhealthy as repressing it :P
(01:31:01) Maggie: and THEN it mutated AGAIN
(01:31:03) Maggie: and became a fashion
What I didn't mention was that even punk was preceded by Sturm und Drang because I don't think iza would have appreciated that :P
In other news! I can has a haircut! And some books! (although not the ones I was looking for as it appears The Vor Game is not only not in my local Dymocks but not in their regional warehouse and not in fact in their computer system at all!) And moar youtube! Argh, The Matches seriously kill me. All their videos with making of segments are hilarious and adorkable and OH MY GOD JON DEVOTO WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR. (Shawn's hair no longer rates a comment. Besides, his outfit didn't have a single ruffle on it, he gets a break :P) And oh my god, in the second one the drummer made a facial expression! And it wasn't :|, it was more like :D!!! That's astonishing.
