GodDAMMIT. This is the second time I've co-written a play in drama and had it rejected for being too deep/scary for the target audience. Both with different people! (Admittedly Liv's serial killer collection may have influenced this one as well as my creepy mermaids and Russian legends, and I'm not even going to start on Mel's porcelain dolls.) But seriously! argh!
I guess we just kind of got carried away in writing it good and forgot about writing it for primary school kids. I mean, I reckon kids can take a lot more than we give'em credit for, but tell that to Ms Surbey - and it's true that we had a bit much blood and murder and descriptive language, but she vetoes our first idea for being insulting to their intelligence!
Anyway, me and Liv have both created Disnified versions, which we're going to combine in Drama this afternoon, but I am damn well keeping the original. That stuff was good creepy. When we showed it to the class, complete with interruptions from Dragon S along the lines of "Too much gore!", several people were like "OMG! That's scary!" And we didn't even have lighting. I got a little creeped out just playing the little girl. So that play is damn well getting performed at some point when we have an audience whose parents won't sue us if they get nightmares.
