OH MY GOD. I'm just... I... WELSH PEOPLE ROCK.
That is all. Hornblower fans and people who watched Rove Live last night or Glasshouse just now will agree with me.
Speaking of Rove, is it weird that just yesterday he goes on a tangent about merkins and then today I read a Neil Gaiman blog entry which mentions them? WTF? It's even funnier because a certain google group uses the word to refer to Americans, because of the way some of them pronounce American. ...hey, and the wikipedia entry mentions it too, so it's legit! Dude, the world is odd.
The title of the song I'm listening to right now amuses me. I keep thinking "Shot shot, the missiles, zey are coming!"
I saw V for Vendetta with Nicky today. It was good, although possibly reading the
m15m version before seeing the movie wasn't the best idea, since I started gigging about Dance Dance Revolution halfway through the movie. My favourite image was that crowd of people in the guy fawkes masks - the determination and the sheer "ohshit" of the soldiers was awesome.
Also I knocked up another few notches in my librarian-stumping post. Damn those cartographers! I went to all the effort of getting a Sydney Uni library card, since I was there and had an hour for lunch. Then I went to the information desk because their catalogue confused me.
"Topographic maps of Sydney," says the librarian, "Hmmmm." She tries a few different permutations of the keywords, and comes up with ONE book that might help me, something about Sydney Basin. And it's in a whole nother building, to boot.
Ah well, it's only twenty five past, so I get directions and wander off to this "Badham Library" place. It's not that hard to find, and apparantly only one story, unlike the main building which is FOUR. I walked along the shelves checking the Dewies - there were about six rows full of 600s, and then one which is labelled "613 - 960". I later found out that this was the biological sciences library, which sort of explains it.
Anyway, I sat myself down in front of that section to find my number. It was completely absent. There was a little folder with a technical map of Australia, but not useful. So I went to their desk, and the librarian there looked up the number again and said "Gregory's Street Directory?"
Me: ...what?
Librarian: That's what this number came up with.
Me: ...so, not Sydney Basin?
Librarian: Let me do your search again.
Well, she comes up with two more numbers for me. One is in Madson library, which I don't have time to find as I have about twenty minutes left of lunch. Another is back at the main library building, so I head back there and go upstairs to the resources section, where this book purports to be.
Here's a breakdown of the shelf with those numbers on it:
The Solar System. The Big Bang. A History Of Cartography. Time And Space.
Hmmm, says I. Methinks somebody is messing with me. I'm not about to question The Great Dewey in his placement of cartography right between the universe and the nature of causality, but has ANYONE published a book of maps around here since, oh, 1963?! There was ONE BOOK. It's a UNIVERSITY LIBRARY SPANNING FOUR FLOORS, and they had one book about maps.
Is it just me or is there a serious gap in the market here?
