I think a major flaw in this system is the fact that the majority of livejournals are not in fact in use.
Or just don't have friends.

So many people just make an LJ and then forget about it, like my with my neopets and gaia accounts.

Orphan journals (ie, unfriended journals and/or journals with no friends) should be discarded by the PageRank algorithm, the workings of which are vaguely explained here (http://active-apathy.livejournal.com/82537.html?thread=1399145).

Hmm. strange. I have a friend who does not use her livejournal at all, and her rank was just below the median. Mind you, that wasn't an average. We'd really need an average and a standard deviation. ...yay too much statistics for me.

The average will be whatever the start value for each user is, which is more than likely 1 (or thereabouts). The way it works, it's impossible for the total of everyone's popularity to be more than s*n, where s = starting value and n = number of LJers.

Oh... interesting. So why not set the start value at 5, if it's out of ten?

(a) because it's not a linear scale.
(b) because, eventually, it makes no difference to the actual results, mostly because (a).

Oh, okay. This will make more sense in two years time, when I have at least part of a statistics course under my belt.

Stupid non-linears. I prefer "For the purpose of this hypothetical let's assume a cow is a sphere" science. ^_^

It's by forthegenuine, who I am eternally grateful to for putting their name in the filename so I don't have to type it out constantly.
