That's it. That's exactly it. They act as if science and religion are the same, and because their religion has no adiaphora (http://slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/2005/07/creationism_sna_2.html) (to cite another Slacktivist post), because their religion fails if any of its pronouncements are false, they assume science is the same.
It's a fundamental misconception, promoted because (I suspect) it allows them to dismiss science instead of their own infallibility.
