I ended up skipping the movie tonight because I got back from the sleepover and I STILL HAVE THE COLD. Hopefully the break will mean I can go to this week's other events without making myself more sick, because Stan and Avi's birthday party IS this weekend. The sleepover was fun, by the way. My bus was slower than expected so I ended up keeping Nicky waiting at the train station. Then she ignored me for the whole walk to Min's house, but I didn't mind because she spent twenty minutes hanging around so I figured I owed her at least as much time to get over herself. Also, it was a really nice day. Ruxi was already there. Things we watched: Resident Evil: SHOOT IT IN THE HEAD. IN THE HEAD. SHOOT IT. Amnesia gives convenient exposition, doesn't it? Blades of Glory: My reaction to the intro: are they gay? Oh no, they're just ice-skaters. ...are they gay ice skaters? That would be cool! Then I laughed myself silly for the entire movie so thumbs up. The Illusionist: I totally did not predict the ending. I know! But it was kind of awesome and I really liked the policeman character, which is good because I only really appreciated the others on an archetypal/romantic level. Well, Amanda Palmer's Another Year kept going through my head re: Sophie. DOA: Totally. Awesome. I mean, okay, apparently nobody thought of giving wrestlers actual, yaknow, wrestling moves instead of Carbon Copy Karate, but nobody expected better. In fact I expected much worse on a feminist level considering they opened with a montage of cleavage shots (not really but they may as well have. ...actually that would be kind of awesome). But no, multiple cool female protagonists with recognisable personalities! We, well, I also got to have a lot of fun shouting things at the screen like IN THE HEAD! "Don't date your stalker oh my god! Your stalker! Do not date him!" and "Where did she get that parachute!?" and "WTF where did purple haired lady even come from!? What is a white chick doing in a monastery!? THIS IS NOT ADEQUATELY EXPLAINED." and "What the fuck! everyone can fly!" and "WHY DON'T YOU JUST DECK HIM AND BREAK THE SUNNIES OMG." Also who was not expecting that villain? Seriously, anybody? Bueller? I was a tad confused as to why he had to ( spoiler ) Eh? I loved the random little nods to the video game with KAY OOOOOH and the elaborate excuses to get them fighting in different locations. I also thought I saw a hint of the Japanese origins with Tina and the ~lesbian jokes and being the only one not to pair up at the end. I mean, consider what they did to the translation of Sailor Moon. But I might be overanalysing things.
Somewhere in there we ordered pizza and Min dug out an old party game. I categorically proved that yes, it is in fact possible to lose at Rummikub without making a single move. That is, if you play by the rule that your first move has to total over thirty and can't use anything already on the board. I picked up TWENTY TWO EXTRA TILES. ZERO of them were any of the tiles I needed to make a move. I had EVERY SINGLE EIGHT IN THE GAME except for the two in the colour I needed. I had TEN DOUBLES. I completely maxed out my rack and did not play one single tile in that entire game, which meant the others couldn't make half the combos they needed because I was tying up all the tiles. Damn you chance, damn you! To be fair I also won two games. I went to bed when the others decided to watch 300 because I really don't need to see that again. In the morning we had brunch at a cafe - mmmm scrambled eggs.
Anyway, to links!
I found some other people's videos of The Matches in Aus, although it took some doing to get ones that actually showed Jon's broken fingers clearly, and the sound quality is terrible so turn down the volume. Props to that guy, anyway. Nice ass too. Can you tell that video was shot by a chick? I think you can.
Sarah Reese Brennan is being funny again.
This ought to be a fandom game. Watch some clips of your favourite characters with that comic in mind, you guys, I guarantee hilarity.
Found an amusing take on the google-count website: which is gayer?
*cough* Extraordinary Segue: Stewart and Colbert bring the lulz. We've got three financial networks on all day. The bottom falls out of the credit market, and they were all running around. On CNBC I saw a guy talking to eight people in [eight different onscreen] boxes, and they were all like, ''I don't know!'' It'd be like if Hurricane Ike hit, and you put on the Weather Channel, and they were yelling, ''I don't know what the fuck is going on! I'm getting wet and it's windy and I don't know why and it's making me sad! Maybe the president could come down and put up some sort of windscreen?'
