THREE. Three SGHS people I did not expect in my classes. Not a one that I said a word to during high school, though (well, apart from this, KaYtEE), so I continue to find my New Writing BFFs elsewhere. Mostly boys, the last few classes. Perhaps it's a reaction to six years at an all girl's school?

Of the three classes I've had so far, Writing: Style and Structure is definitely going to be my favourite - which is a good thing considering this is the professional stream for the course I chose! The others are looking okay, though. Get this, a thirty percent assignment in Communication and Information Environments involves blogging. We have a small group that discusses the readings online each week, and in May we hand in our three best and three worst "responses", one time we kicked off the discussion, and a 500-word rationale on both. No, really.

I demonstrated my sad lack of brain-to-mouth filters in Rethinking Culture. The tutor asked us for examples of Cultural Texts (this is going to be a fairly wanky topic, I can tell). TV, books, advertisements... "Okay," he says, "I'm thinking of something a little more off-the-wall..."

And I blurt out "Graffiti!"

*silence*

"Because... it's... off the wall... um nevermind."

Tutor: "No, no, that's, yes, not what I was thinking of but certainly graffiti is a cultural text..."

That is a common occurrence for me. Captain O reporting, out.

I don't know when I'll have time to read notes for my classes! I have three MASSIVE readers to buy and a more normal-sized textbook, and people keep inviting me to things! Yesterday Beth and I were going to go to SPROCKET (UTS film club) to watch Brokeback Mountain, but they rather cleverly held the meeting in the Glasshouse Bar at five o'clock during summer, hmmm, what could go wrong? What do you mean there are no curtain son the ceiling!?

So instead we grabbed Henrietta and headed over to USYD for a comedy night, which was brilliant. Line-up included the Axis of Awesome and Tripod... is it just me or is the three-man-comedy-band format getting quite popular? But the Axis was indeed Awesome (how to catch a duck! Crime solving *cough* cowboys! And a medley that completely upstaged Rob P. although his cello jokes still win) and so of course were Tripod. I hadn't seen either of them live before, I only knew AoA from their wonderful Election Rap Battle. In between, though, was some guy called Sam who just bombed completely. I felt so sorry for him because I know what it feels like to get up on stage and fail that badly and it is not fun, but seriously. He was awful. He had stage presence, he just wasn't funny. At all. He kept going on about choose-your-own-adventure games and pulling people onstage to throw random "trivia" questions at them before supplying the punchlines himself after they went "um..." for a bit. I was like "...can we get to page six where you fall into the pit of quicksand, and then the scorpions come?"

I always hated Choose Your Own Adventure! books anyway. Today I'm going to Purple Sneakers, which is apparently some sort of indie music club type thing. I'm really not sure if I should but, eh. Why not? They have glowsticks! And then on Saturday I'm watching the Mardi Gras parade. it took me long enough to find someone who wanted to go with me - everyone's all oh, mardi gras is so last year, what the hell? It was right before my exams last year.

Anyway, I shall leave you with another amusing link and go get dessed.
