Anecdotes and Classroom Tales
Apr. 6th, 2005 05:28 pmMy dad, in a fit of fluey delirium, imparted to me some worldly knowledge. I missed most of the actual advice, but he ahs awesome stories about Back in the USSR. Like how all the engineers and accountants and people who worked with their minds and not their hands, had to go and do community service by picking vegetables once a week. They didn't mind cos they got fresh vegies, which was pretty hard to get from the shops. Also the uni students had faculty groups which would have to go for a few weeks in the summer and live in a village and do odd jobs and repairwork, because the ocals were too drunk. One time, they were building outdoor toilets. It was just a hut with a hole in the floor over a pit. They would take turns getting the fun job of cutting the hole, which they could do in any shape they wanted, and one guy cut too far and hit a cross-beam and fell into the pit. (In Soviet russia, the toilet sits on YOU!)
They also had to straighten railroads, because the soviet ones have no cross beams and thus get bent. Oh, and one time, they spent a month grape-picking. They had to make their own alcohol, and one guy filled a three litre bottle with crushed grapes, chucked something in to ferment it, whacked on the lid and put it under his bed. Well, in the middle of the night they heard a thump, a yell and another thump. It seems all the gas from the fermenting grapes had blown the top off the lid with enough force to translate through the thin matrass and kick him out of bed.
All very fascinating, I must procure further anecdotes at some point. You know, my dad was in the second last year to be exempt from conscription while studying. He was already earmarked for Ground Control if he ever did get conscripted - they decided as soon as you were old enough for it. He was too tall for the tanks or the submarines, and had weak eyesight so he couldn't go in the infantry or fly planes.
Speaking of parents, my mum is weird. Avi rang yesterday at like 10:30 while we were watching Rove Live.
My mum picks up the phone: "Hello? Yes. No, she's asleep. Sorry. call back tomorrow. Bye." Then she puts the phone down.
Me: Uh... was that Avi?
Mum: *shifty eyes* ...yes. ...butitstoolatetocallbacknowyoucancallhimtomorrow.

Today in science we had a prac exam involving measuring the density of iron nails. I have this whole conspiracy theory going that the nails weren't actually made of iron, and that because for the purpose of the test only our experimental results mattered, they could easily have just given everyone any old nails.
We've started Page to Stage in drama. I'm with Diana, and I came up with a pretty dark battlefield idea, which we have to watch while we develop it in case it gets too dark for the wibble year sewenshes to handle, since we'll be using them for the Seven-Ten Director Projects. Diana is a very, very, very friendly person. I think I've mentioned this before, but she is extremely friendly.
In the middle of Geography someone came in with a very official looking note telling me to report to the Science staff room at recess. They wanted to take a photo of all us GAT science people for the HiHo. We were like "But... didn't you already mention us in the last HiHo?" And they said "meh. They wouldn't let us put individual pictures in."
Speaking of geography, we had a substitue today, which was most annoying since she kept telling mer to stop reading and answer the questins. And we had her in Elective History too!! Horror!! In that one I didn't mind so much because I could join in the lively discussion on Genocide which quickly migrated to George Bush, abortion and gay marriage, like it always does, I swear it's like living in on a compass and Obvious Political Issues are magnetic north. At least we didn't get onto communism and womens rights this time. Bah.
...and my dad just came in to tell me to dismantle my computer as he's taking it back to work to get his friend with the tricky moves to have a look at the soundcard. On the bright side I'll hopefully have The Sims 2 back on sunday, as long as I have my COMPUTER back by then XP
