bliumchik: Dr. Horrible laughs evilly (squee)
[personal profile] bliumchik
Mix: Cheerjerkers
Length: 17 tracks
Warnings: Erm, you may go a bit starry-eyed for some of these songs and therefore be slightly unproductive for an unknown period of time?
Other Notes: Hopefully this will cure any blues you may have contracted from my Tearjerkers mix. 8tracks licensing rules mean you can only listen to this in the order I've put it in once. As always, if you like these artists make a note to spend some money on them at some point in time. This used to be a bit more disjointed, with half of it songs that were basically About how You Should Cheer Up Already, and half of it just random stuff that made me smile. I realised that the first lot actually get on your nerves a bit when they are that concentrated, so I cut most of the less subtle ones, and I cut a few from the latter category too that didn’t fit. So yep, this used to be much longer, have some
Bonus Songs: Banned From Argo, which always makes ME smile, but didn’t really fit anywhere and I thought I’d have slightly fewer injokes. And Cheer Up (You Miserable Fuck) which was the original title of this playlist. I actually like it better than the Frank Turner song in there, I couldn’t decide between them for a while, but in the end this one was too sorrowful in the verses.

Have a listen, and tell me in the comments about the songs I don't know that always cheer you up!

1. Tegan and Sara - Fix You Up

You bring it up and bring it in and we'll get you fixed up in no time
Cause this love is all I have to give

I basically have nothing to say about this song except "awww."

2. The Weakerthans - Plea From A Cat Named Virtue

And listen, about those bitter songs you sing;
they’re not helping anything,
they won’t make you strong.

…although actually "awww" kind of describes most of the songs on this mix. But I mean, come on. Your cat is grumpy because you’re sad and wants you to feel better. What else is there to say about that!?

3. Defiance Ohio - You Are Loved

if I have one regret it’s letting this whole nihilistic shit charade live on!
You know it scares the hell out of me when my friends think they have nobody to lean on!

Defiance Ohio are so indie their recording quality is a little bit shit, which is unfortunate because this song is really sweet. They’re touring Australia right now and I saw them last week, but unfortunately the sound quality at the Annandale is even worse :/ somebody just doesn’t want me to listen to this shit properly!

4. Andrew Jackson Jihad – People

People are wasteful, they waste all the food.
People are hateful, and people are rude.
But God I love some people sometimes
Because people are very very special.

idek. you can blame my boyfriend for this :P most of AJJ’s songs are actually about super depressing things but sung in a hilarious/upbeat way, which is why they weren’t on the Tearjerker playlist. This one is probably the most literally cheerful of all of them. At least it’s not going on about Nazis and cigarettes.

5. Like... Alaska – Adorable

But I’ve done my best, I’ve been stitching up my chest
With every kiss goodnight, with every shallow breath
And I have grown enough, I’ve let you die for days and I’ve seen you rise above
So I am grateful for this kicking screaming love

…and THIS band is so indie their lyrics are not on the internet, so I had to type them up off the lyrics sheet in the CD! I love them too much to leave them off though, even though most of their songs are sad songs, and even this one is kind of bittersweet.

6. the Mountain Goats - This Year

there will be feasting and dancing
in jerusalem next year
i am going to make it through this year
if it kills me

I wasn’t sure whether to put this song in, since I only came to love it and hear it as a hopeful, uplifting song after I saw an entire venue full of people singing along to it in chorus. The Mountain Goats are weird like that. Anyway, this mix is not just about feeling good but specifically about feeling better so I figured I’d leave it in.

7. Jimmy Eat World - Praise Chorus

I'm on my feet
I'm on the floor
I'm good to go
all I need is just to hear a song I know

I do not have enough music by this band. I’m not actually sure where I got this one!

8. The Matches - Little Maggots

May your organs fail before your dreams fail you
May your organs fail before your dreams fail you
May your organs fail before your dreams fail you

I am going to write this on a tshirt. (fun fact: considered the tattoo before realising I would still have it when I was old enough to be in danger of ACTUAL organ failure and it might not be so awesome then)

9. Frank Turner - Reasons Not To Be An Idiot

I'm not as awesome as this song makes out
I'm angry underweight and sketching out
I'm building bonfires on my vanities and doubts
To get warm, just like everybody else

This was one of the many "cheer up, dammit!" songs I originally had, and I mostly kept it because it’s the most upbeat of all of them. Also it sort of reminds me of I Wish Somebody Would Build A Bridge.

10. Regina Spektor - Dance Anthem of the 80's

An addiction to hands and feet
There's a meat market down the street
The boys and girls watch each other eat
When they really just wanna watch each other sleep.

Here’s one that’s mostly here because it makes me smile, not because it’s actually about feeling better. Regina Spektor, being cheerful and making me want to dance!

11. Jupiter Sunrise - Arthur Nix

Did your arm heal faster than your heart did, Arthur?
Oh, if we had the power to trap anything that could hurt
A human being inside a jar we'd send it far from Earth and watch
It explode in the sun to the cheers of everyone

nnnnnndaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww- ahem. Sorry, that is all I have to say about this song.

12. the Mountain Goats - Jam Eater Blues

life is too short to leave the windows open all winter long.
i'm gonna lock 'em up tight and eat jam out of the jar all night.
'cause life is too short to make toast,
or use spoons or napkins.

I challenge you not to come away from here singing about jam. Go on. JAM!

13. Ghost Mice - Critical Hit

Cross your fingers roll the die.
Let it go, let it go, let it go.
Let it roll, let it roll, let it roll.
Don't give up yet, no, don't ever quit.
There's always a chance of a critical hit!

Yes, my friends, that IS INDEED a dungeons’n’dragons allegory you see there. I shall now stand back and give you room to squee.

14. Old Canes - Little Bird Courage

When I’m thirsty
You are a fountain
In the face of danger
I am not afraid

Yet another band so fucking indie their fucking lyrics are not on the fucking internet. I don’t have their CD either, this was a Gumdrop free sample track, so I had to put it down by ear :P

15. KiD CuDi - Up Up & Away

I'll be up, up and away, up, up and away
'Cause in the end they'll judge me anyway so whatever

You may have noticed we have come upon the unironic, uplifting portion of this mix.

16. Great Big Sea - Walk On the Moon

I'm alive
I've come to realize not a moment too soon
This is my one small step
This is my Walk on the Moon

I have less to say about the unironic ones :P

17. Florence The Machine - Dog Days Are Over

The dog days are over
The dog days are done
Can you hear the horses?
Because here they come.
