bliumchik: Mommy, I dropped my giant cowsicle! :( (Um.)
[personal profile] bliumchik
Mix: Tearjerkers
Length: 18 tracks
Warnings: Y'all can be the judge of whether an hour or so of sad music will be detrimental to your emotional state, but also sad songs tend to be about specific things which are sad and some of which are triggery, so please drop me a comment/message if there's something in particular you're avoiding right now and I will tell you which song to skip.
Other Notes: 8tracks licensing rules mean you can only listen to this in the order I've put it in once. As always, if you like these artists make a note to spend some money on them at some point in time. If not one song on this list makes you feel a bit like weeping, it is entirely possible that we have irreconcilable philosophical differences. You may want to follow it up immediately with my Cheerjerkers mix. Also, I had to cut this playlist down ridiculously to fit it into a mix. So therefore have a
Bonus Song: No Gringo

Have a listen, and tell me about the songs I don't know about that always make you cry in the comments!

1. Regina Spektor - Somedays

Downtown, downtown
I'm not here, not anymore
I've gone away
Don't call me don't write

Good old Regina. Back in high school this actually made me shed a tear in public (on a bus, lol).

2. Jump, Little Children - Cathedrals

In the shadows of tall buildings
The architecture is slowly peeling
Marble statues and glass dividers
Someone is watching all of the outsiders

This song has an atmosphere of quiet, looming menace, and would probably hit my dystopia playlists as well.

3. The Mountain Goats - Deuteronomy

In Costa Rica in a burrow underground
Climb to the surface, blink my eyes and look around.
I'm all alone here as I try my tiny song
Claim my place beneath the sky but i won't be here for long.
I sang all night the moon shone on me through the trees
No brothers left and there'll be no more after me

John Darnielle's sad songs tend to be heavily tempered with anger, irony or selfconsciousness, but here he's like "nah. I'm gonna go with singin' about extinct animals. Deal with it." Bawwwww.

4. Idina Menzel - I'm Not That Girl (from Wicked: The Musical)

Blithe smile, lithe limb
She who's winsome, she wins him
Gold hair with a gentle curl
That's the girl he chose
And Heaven knows
I'm not that girl

The point in the show when I actually cried was the climax of Defying Gravity (dear god that thing is well-crafted) but I felt that song was a little too uplifting for this particular mix :P

5. Vienna Teng - Antebellum

I know the borderlines we drew between us
Keep the weapons down, keep the wounded safe.
I know our antebellum innocence
Was never meant to see the light of our armistice day

I don't really know why this one makes me cry, but it does. I ended up cutting No Gringo from this playlist, after being unable to decide between them for ages (it was getting too long :/)

6. Matthew Good Band - Sort of a Protest Song

Our lives in these empty spaces aside
I'm tired of walking around with my hand on my gun.
I'm tired of watching them wind you up to see if you'll run.
Tonight I'm going to go out and have me some fun
I'm tired of walking around here with my hand on my gun.

This is another one that could also go on the Dystopian playlist. I don't even have any other songs by this band, I probably should.

7. Paul Dempsey - Ramona Was A Waitress

I don’t need these arms anymore
I don’t need this heart, now to love
I don’t need this skin and bones
At all

I was actually told by someone that this song is about suicide? I guess I can see that, but I've always thought of it as being about robots.

Sad robots.

8. The Honorary Title - Snow Day

These confrontations puncture the skin
Reveal evidence that you are easily broken
You're so easily broken
Exposed and relentlessly bleeding from the cracks
At that age when everything is seemingly life or death

Team High School: Sometimes It's A Bit Shit.

9. Street To Nowhere - They're Not Like Us

They never felt the sting
No they're not like us
We fell for everything

High School Sucks: Electric Boogaloo. (Don't worry, my Cheer Up playlist has the antidote!)

10. The Wooden Sky - When Lost At Sea

I woke up on my hands and knees,
The night was cold and I began to see
That I'd pinned myself to another name that had sold me out before

I can't even figure out what this song is about, but I know it's something awful.

11. Brand New - Play Crack the Sky

This story's old but it goes on and on until we disappear,
Calm me and let me taste the salt you breathed while you were underneath.
I am the one who haunts your dreams of mountains sunk below the sea,
I spoke the words but never gave a thought to what they all could mean.

Jesse Lacey has all the feelings, you guys. It was so hard not to put about six Brand New songs on this playlist.

12. The Weakerthans - Without Mythologies

Someplace far away, at some sad table littered with chipped plates,
with bad light, in 48 frames from a movie on the cutting room floor,
you said true meaning would be dying with you,
and though I wanted to, I did not smile.

I've loved this song forever. It is full of quiet despair. Although I’ve always had syntax problems with the secondlast line I quoted – sometimes it is written with quote marks! THIS CHANGES EVERYTHINNNNNG

13. Like... Alaska - 17/11/04

These past few years my short loan heart's been overdue
She can borrow it but it belongs to you.
And it's true some things you just don't leave behind,
now when I sleep I close your eyes.
When I was fourteen I thought no-one really died.

Oh god, I don't even. This song. ;_____________; basically Jen Buxton's voice is surgically attached to my tear ducts. L…A have a lot of sad songs, but this one just. idek it just kills me every time.

(Oz: this is a local band and you should come to their gigs :3)

14. The Receiving End Of Sirens - Stay Small

I know you'll grow,
But I wish I knew you'd stay small if I said so.
Please just don't grow.
Please just don't grow.
Just stay small.

Thought I'd follow up the sad about my dad(?) song with the sad about my kids song.

15. A Love Like Pi - I am a Soldier

I know that every single talk show will tell me I should let it out, let it out
Their make up makes it seem so made up, I watched them all let it out, let it out
But there's no microphones inside these aching bones.

;___; I basically just want to track this boy down and provide him with all of the hugs. ALL OF THEM.

16. Amanda Palmer - Astronaut

it is enough to have some love
small enough to slip inside the cracks
the pieces don't fit together so good
with all the breaking and all the gluing back

Amanda Palmer is another "oh god WHICH SONGS DO I USE" artist: she has a lot of sad songs. The video tipped this one over into actual tears for me. PS you can buy this for cents on Bandcamp via!

17. Brand New - Accident Prone (Jawbreaker cover)

A near miss or a close call?
I keep a room at the hospital
I scratch my accidents into the wall

I know, I know – trying not to double up on artists! I maintain that this doesn't count because it is a cover. I would have stuck in the original but once again: Jesse Lacey has SO MANY FEELINGS. The Jawbreaker version is just not as pitiful as this.

18. Jonathan Larson - One Song Glory (from RENT: the Musical)

Find one song
Before the virus takes hold
Glory like a sunset
One song to redeem this empty life

I wanted to post I'll Cover You (Reprise), because that was the one I bawled at when I went to see this in fucking Berowra (well, I cried at several parts of it, but especially that one). Then I had a closer listen to the version on the soundtrack and it turns out the reason it affected me so much then was the actor/singer: his stage presence, the way his voice broke on the chorus, the whole atmosphere. So, because that's absent in the official version, I've gone with Glory, which is pretty damn sad (even though it contains some cliches, as all of Roger's songs do... going for realism, apparently :P)
